Sajeesh’s newly built house in Mampully in Thrissur, Kerala has attracted eyes for its interesting shape and unique design features. The structure is cleverly designed to fit the L-shaped plot of 15.5 cents. To protect the large old banyan tree standing west of the plot, the structure was designed to face this direction. The house therefore looks unique from the gate and from inside the yard.
The house has a carport, sitting, living and dining areas, courtyard, kitchen with a work area, three bathrooms attached bedrooms and a study area designed in 2000 sq. Although the house looks like a double-story structure, it is actually a single-story residence. Interestingly, a bedroom has been arranged in the mezzanine floor above the carport.
Built-in seats are arranged around the banyan tree to enjoy its cool shade. Meanwhile, the circular window in the formal living area is designed as a bay window. The space at the front was turned into a porch by retaining the pillars and avoiding concrete walls.
The cute sit-out in the floating style is quite interesting. Instead of designing this area as a separate sit-out, the third step leading to the house has been turned into a cute sit-out space.
The interiors stand out for their minimal charm and elegance. The spaces are not overloaded with flashy decor or over-the-top furniture. The walls mostly carry the calm charm of the white shade. Even while ensuring enough privacy, the spaces are designed in the semi-open style. Each space possesses a unique identity while being space efficient and usable.
The living area has a double height ceiling. Meanwhile, the TV unit has been installed on the wall here.
The beautiful courtyard is the highlight of the interior. The brick wall here has many air holes to ensure cross ventilation. In addition, the skylight ceiling also brings in natural sunshine. The family says that there is no need to turn on the fan or light inside the house during the day.
The dining table in a semi-oval shape is quite an eye-catcher. It has a small bench on one side and cushioned chairs on the other.
The wall next to the staircase is painted yellow which adds a lively atmosphere to the interior. Meanwhile, the handrails are done in MS.
The bedrooms are simple and efficient. The bedrooms attached to the bath also have closets and study areas.
The compact kitchen has arranged everything within easy reach. An adjoining work area completes the modern kitchen.
The family says that the interiors radiate positive vibes that are also reflected in their lives. Meanwhile, the designers of this house endearingly call it the ‘Banyan Tree House’.
