Get an inside look at Cy-Fair ISD’s newest school, McGown Elementary

The elementary began its inaugural school year with 1,080 students from kindergarten through 5th grade and fully staffed, with 108 staff members.

“The McGown Owls had a great first day of school,” Principal LauraAnn Novacinski said. “Students enjoyed exploring their new classrooms, flexible learning spaces, and reading nooks around the building.”

The flexible learning spaces are a favorite feature of McGown teachers, Novacinski said. They allow students to collaborate in varying group sizes, with rooms able to change shape for small groups or expand for larger student groups or classroom projects.

“Students love the beautiful new building, and teachers say that classroom spaces were designed with their teaching needs in mind,” Novacinski said.

Named after CFISD educational professional Sue McGown, the 25,000-square-foot, two-story facility was a part of the 2019 bond, costing $32.6 million out of the $1.76 billion bond program.

The school’s design complies with the Collaborative for High Performance Schools, or TX-CHPS, standards. The TX-CHPS criteria focuses on designing schools that promote health, academic performance, and good environmental stewardship.

“Flexibility for instructional delivery, natural daylight in classrooms and reducing energy consumption are all incorporated into the design of the new elementary school,” said Leslie Francis, assistant superintendent for communication and community relations for Cy-Fair ISD.

Additionally, the campus’ design helps limit stormwater runoff, reduces potable water usage, and uses renewable materials, she detailed.

The campus also features areas where classes may be held outside.

“The teachers are very excited about how the numerous outdoor learning spaces will enhance instruction,” Novacinski said. “McGown is also one of four CFISD campuses to offer Spanish instruction for all students, through an action-based learning lab, as part of the students’ class rotation schedule alongside music, art, and PE”

Although the first day of school was Aug. 22, Novacinski said McGown Elementary staff have been preparing for the semester in the preceding weeks. Along with the operations team deep cleaning and nutrition services preparing the “Grab and Go” breakfast line, all staff were on deck and planning for the school year.

“We had officers on site assisting us with morning arrival and afternoon dismissal,” Novacinski said. “In addition, we were fortunate to have Bus Buddies, school district and community volunteers, for each of our buses to help our students transition between school and home.

“We were also so grateful for the support of the Technology department, assisting teachers with connectivity and supporting us with technology needs throughout the first few days of school. Members of the Curriculum department have checked on special programs and offered support as needed.”

Security measures were also taken at the campus, adopting the layered security approach from other campuses including secure vestibules, keycard entry and officers on campus.

“All exterior doors at McGown Elementary are locked,” Novacinski said. “Visitors must ring a doorbell and indicate specific business before being admitted into the secured vestibule.”

Even after entering the school, the facility has several security measures in place between the entry vestibule and classrooms.

“Once inside the building, there are multiple locked doors before gaining entry into any instructional wing and again before entering any classroom,” Novacinski said. “All classroom doors remain locked throughout the day. McGown will teach safety drill protocols to students and practice drills regularly. Our campus is committed to ensuring the safety of every student every day.”

With a strong start to the semester, Novacinski said the staff is dedicated to staying the course and making sure students are safe and educated.

“The McGown staff were excited to launch the inaugural year of the newest campus in CFISD,” she said. “We are so lucky to be a part of CFISD, where we support each other like family, bringing out the best for all.”
